COVID-19 UPDATES FOR COUNTY OFFICIALS

As issues continue to develop and change at a quick rate with COVID-19, the Coronavirus, we at the Wisconsin Counties Association (WCA) are working alongside Governor Tony Evers, the Administration, the National Association of Counties (NACo) and our general counsel, Attolles Law, s.c., to provide the latest resources and updates to assist county officials during this unprecedented time.

COVID-19 DAILY HEALTH UPDATE
(Information from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) current as of 1:00 p.m. Central, Friday, May 22, 2020)

  • Total people with negative results: 172,703 (+9,465)
  • Total people with positive results: 14,396 (+511)
  • Hospitalizations: 2,259 (+41) or 16%
  • Total deaths: 496 (+9)

2020 CENSUS UNDERWAY DESPITE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
In counties across the nation, residents are completing the Census through self-response, prior to the initiation of door-to-door efforts that have been delayed due to COVID-19.

NACo’s County Explorer now has updated data that shows the 2020 Census response rates by county. Note the map and infographic in the link below are updated daily.)

As of May 20, 2020, 35.2 percent of counties are above the national average of 59.7% in census completion rates.

GOVERNOR TONY EVERS ANNOUNCES $100 MILLION FOR LONG-TERM CARE, HOME AND COMMUNITY BASED SERVICES, AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES
On May 21, 2020, Governor Evers announced a grant program funded by the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Totaling $100 million dollars, the funding will support providers most at-risk for financial hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The providers targeted for financial assistance include emergency medical services, home and community-based services, and long-term care providers such as skilled nursing facilities and assisted living facilities.
